5 Tips for Dog Walking in Rain and Snow

Whether you live in the warm south, or the wintery north, it’s like you’ll experience days or even weeks of rainy and/or snowy weather. Sometimes it’s unavoidable, in which case you’ll need to venture outside with your dog! We’re here to give you tips on how to keep your pet (and yourself) prepared and safe through any types of weather!

1) Stick to the Sidewalk

Whether it’s raining or snowing, you never know what can pile up along the side of the roads. When walking your dog, be sure to keep them on the sidewalks to avoid muddy sludge getting in their paws when its raining or has rained recently. When in the snow, “many dogs do not have fur on their bellies, so wading in deep snow may be fun for a few minutes but could make your dog much colder on extended walks.(2)”

2) Have Winter Gear for Your Dog (AND Yourself!)

Depending on your dog’s breed, they may be more susceptible to the weather. “A dog winter coat can be a windbreaker, protecting your dog from wind-chill, can keep your dog from getting wet and chilled, and can add a layer of insulation to keep him warmer for longer.(2)” As for yourself, invest in waterproof pants, a raincoat, and rain boots for those wet rainy days. In the Winter, have handy a winter coat, gloves, snow boots, ear muffs, or even cleats for the bottom of your shoes for walking on ice. (1)

3) Protect Your Dog’s Paws

“Cold weather, hot and dry weather, rough terrain, and sometimes genetics cause dogs to suffer from calluses and lesions on their paw pads. Ideally, you want to prevent the dog’s paws from going dry and cracking. (2)” It’s recommended to use a use a pet-safe skin conditioner, paw wax or coconut oil on your dogs paws before & after a walk.

4) Use Reflectors

Both rainy and snowy weather means there are big clouds in the sky, often times creating darkness outside. “Make sure you and your dog wear reflective clothing or use an LED collar or leash for your dog to be more visible in the morning and evening. Also, vehicles can have a hard time stopping in the winter, so ensure that drivers can see you and your dog long before they have to stop for you.(2)”

5) Try Alternative Exercise

If you encounter extreme weather such as a tropical storm, blizzard or polar vortex, its best not to attempt an outdoor walk. Such conditions can be unsafe for yourself and your pet, and you’ll be trapped inside. “Indoor play is a great way to give your dog exercise if the temperature is below freezing or if it’s storming out. Get your puppy's favorite toy, and waggle it in front of their face. After a quick game of fetch, pat the floor and encourage them to get a little wild. Run through the house with them, and let loose! (2)” Otherwise known as the zoomies!
