5 Ways to Keep Your Dog Busy Indoors!

While we are encouraged to stay indoors, you and your pup may be missing out on some quality dog park or outdoor time. Our pets need exercise now just as much as we do! Here are some tips and tricks for keeping your dog active while sheltering in place.

1) Stairs

If you have stairs in your home or building, run with you dog up and down the stairs to get some steps in! You can motivate them with a treat at the top of each flight, or throw a toy up and down the stairs while your dog runs for it! “The steps add an additional challenge to a dog’s workout, as they engage different muscles than those used on a regular walk or run and add an extra level of difficulty with the change in elevation.” (1)

2) Training Practice

Use some of your extra time indoors to brush up on simple commands, or introduce new training skills to your dog. “Training expends mental and physical energy, builds confidence, and strengthens the human-animal bond. And, of course, you get the added benefit of a well-adjusted pup!” (2)

3)Tug of War and Fetch—But Be Careful!

If you have large open spaces in your home, playing games like tug of war and fetch can be good way to keep your dog active indoors- and yourself! Pick a soft toy or ball for indoor fetch so you don’t risk breaking things in the house, “If your space is more restricted, a hallway can do the job.”

Grab a rope or old rag to play tug of war with your pup! Be sure to keep it playful and not encourage aggressive behavior in your pet. “ A relationship of trust and respect must already be established in order for you to enroll in a this game.” (3)

4) Use Food Dispensing Balls and Puzzle Toys

Puzzle toys are designed to get your dog engaged and working for their treat! Put some of their food into a bouncy toy, such as a Kong and have them run, jump and play for their dinner!

5) Set Up an Indoor Obstacle Course

Ever watch those Dog competitions on TV? Find an old hula hoop, couch cushions, chairs or blankets and set up a course in your home for your pet to complete. Turn it into a training session as they learn each task by giving them a treat when they complete a move correctly! “Map everything out and lead your dog through the various obstacles. This game will challenge your dog both mentally and physically.”(1)
